For a quick pick-me-up, I grabbed some simple, fresh flowers for my home. A little something that makes me happy ;)

Here is a photo of today's arrangement. No-Fuss tulips (one of my favorite flowers... along with peonies and ranunculus) dropped simply in one of my antique Hunan ginger jars. Love the way these stems carelessly flop out of the vessel.

August has been a month of travel, and it has been AMAZING. First, a trip to Chicago to celebrate a birthday. Then, a work visit to Crested Butte for the magazine photo shoot (more on both of those trips later...). Most recently, a first-time visit to the wine country!

I was blown away by the quaint and beautiful Napa Valley town of Yountville. Hotel Yountville was unbelievably charming and just underwent a design renovation that made it hard to leave & easy to stay.

Disclaimer: This photograph does not do it justice. Today at Dallas World Trade Center this incredible bone tray "Atiya" caught my eye. It is BEAUTIFUL! A must-have for the shop!

I am always looking for a great large-scale tray to set on upholstered ottomans. This one is perfect. The size is 18" x 28" and a combination of antiqued bone and natural bone. Available through J.McIntyre HOME, $597.

During my quick-trip to Houston yesterday, I managed to hit one shop before heading to the airport. And it was a winner!

My client took me to Found. A unique (and friendly! they let us sneak in after the 5pm closing) home goods store that has one-of-a-kind antique pieces, classic coffee table books, and loads of local art. This is a must-see if you are looking for interesting finds. This darling shop even has a "guide to our favorite shops, restaurants, and art galleries" they hand out to visitors. And the list is jamb-packed with great local stops, and I plan to hit every one! Houston is my new stomping ground for the next few months... already planning my next trip down!

This month's issue of InStyle magazine not only featured a typical, smirking Katie-I-married-a-sofa-jumper-but-that-is-the-least-of-his-problems-Holmes, but also a custom product I have never seen before and will likely order in the future.

Kaas Glassworks Handmade Decoupage out of New York offers custom decoupage work. Think WEDDING INVITATIONS! I have received incredibly beautiful wedding invitations that are fabulous enough to be categorized as a piece of art. Now you can have that ephemera made into a glass tray keepsake. While updating our library of vendors this weekend, JMI came across Lacefield Designs... and the talented Atlanta artist Andrea Costa.

Lacefield Designs is a home accessory line that focuses on high quality, artisanal products with a hand crafted feel. A peek at their collection of pillows and textiles...

While exploring their website we were reminded of an incredible artist whose work caught our eye at both Round Top and High Point. Andrea Costa creates hauntingly beautiful original oil paintings that I would LOVE to see in my own house, and of course in a client's abode as well. Hopefully I can obtain a few for the shop, and maybe take one home with me! Her collections of paintings below have just been added to THE VAULT (my personal home wish-list). Perfectly serene for a bedroom or study....

Dallas Market is this week and what a great show! We found a few new vendors, and have seen beautiful products from our go-to showrooms as well. Currently I am loving the playful company Cardboard Safari. What a fun way to incorporate animals into a little boys bedroom or a children's play space! They even have an ENORMOUS "Tex" cardboard longhorn that spans about 8 feet wide... and we are proud to have BIG TEX as the newest addition to JMI :) Keep your eyes peeled for this funky product in our new shop (opening September) J. Ever since I saw Monique Lhuillier's home featured on the Jan/Feb 2008 cover of Elle Decor, I have been fascinated with petrified wood. The melted smooth top of grays and whites, combined with the rough outer shell of that side table... LOVE IT! I cannot wait to one day find a beautiful piece to fit the perfect place in my home. If you go after this updated au-naturale look, you better decide where it will go because these stumps (stools) and slabs (table tops) of stone can weigh a TON.

Bunny Williams is an amazing woman in design. Her book, An Affair with a House is on the must-have list for anyone who loves to feel at home in their home. I was lucky enough to bump into her at her new High Point showroom this spring... in addition to being a talented designer who has recently launched her own line, she is the NICEST woman!

The new home furniture and accessories line is named Beeline Home and we love it!!! This is perfect timing for JMI to have picked up new clientele... a young Dallas couple that has a thing for tradition. Bunny, we'll be calling soon!

DwellStudio has gone product design for Global Views (one of our FAVORITE local vendors). JMI is hesitant to endorse "the vase" due to some people's ability to pack them in their home like sardines. Just like candleholders, we cringe when client's homes are cluttered with these unnecessary fillers. Vases and candleholders are typically the first things to be placed in the garage during a revamp (along with faux flowers/greenery). So remember to EDIT and only keep the best & brightest.

DwellStudio has created a series of vases that alone can be a stand-out sculptural object on a desk, mantel, or console table. Beautiful on their own or with fresh flowers, these are some amazing vases!

J.McIntyre HOME is coming along!!! We have finalized our location and are proud to announce that this August we will be moving into an awesome new development in Downtown Arlington. This area of Arlington is booming with the Cowboys Stadium right down the street, and we are excited to be part of the growth! This is a great central location for all of our clients in Fort Worth, Arlington, and Dallas, and will hopefully become home to new walk-in customers looking for unique home goods.

Dodson Development has taken an original 1950's retail building and transformed it into a charming new home for the Flying Fish restaurant, Twisted Root Burger Co, and the second location of BEE: Best Enchilada Ever (and believe me, they are!). So come late summer we will be settled in our new location, surrounded by great restaurants, bars, and other small business owners... and we can't wait!

unwrapping an etiquette enigma

Today's post requires me to tread lightly on a subject that I have long pondered since the post-graduate days of invitations to wedding showers and baby showers began.

GIFT ETIQUETTE

As I searched this morning for a baby shower invitation for my best friend, I was reminded of the many occasions where the mail was delivered to my home and shortly after came the excitement of being invited to a party! Then the astonishment of this request at the bottom of the invitation...

"unwrapped gifts please"

My point of view on this comes from two places.

I thoroughly enjoy wrapping gifts. It is a creative element that I feel goes hand-in-hand with the gift you are giving. With so many options for stylish wrapping paper, ribbons, tags, cards, and those cute little Chinese lunch-box gift packages, who wouldn't?!?
I feel that if I am bringing a gift to a shower, I should be in charge of making the decision on how I would like my present to be presented.

With a little research, I found a great explanation on this subject and why it is against proper etiquette to include this request.

Bridal Shower & Baby Shower Gift Wrapping

In modern times, the main purpose for hosting a baby shower or bridal shower is to celebrate the bride or mommy-to-be and shower them with gifts that they will need for the next chapter of their lives. Many customers have been asking lately about the etiquette behind asking your guests to wrap or not wrap gifts. Many brides/mothers feel that they would rather spend quality time visiting with guests, dining, playing games etc. rather than focusing on material items and others do this from the GREEN perspective.

The straight across answer to this dilema is that it is against proper etiquette to ask your guests to bring an unwrapped gift to a shower – period. It is often considered tacky or that the honoree is unappreciative for the gifts presented and does not want to take the time to open each gift. While in most cases this is not the truth, asking guests to bring an unwrapped present does not give off a good vibe. From the GREEN perspective, we can see how many brides/mothers may feel it important to ‘save a tree’. This has become more accepted but still goes against traditional etiquette.

The bottom line is that most guest truly enjoy watching you open their gift, as well as other guests’ gifts, at the bridal shower or baby shower. Everyone gets a chance to see what the new baby or your new house will have and it can be a very fun bonding experience. Remember that a shower is not only a reflection of the host but also the honoree.

I’m not one that always sticks with traditional etiquette, but in this case, we suggest allowing your guests to bring wrapped gifts.

Lower Oak Lawn (LOL) is quickly becoming the new Dallas hot spot with restaurants, coffee shops, salons, etc. all slated to open in 2011. The Design District is booming and I couldn't be more excited! Equally as enthused is local blogger Kendall Shiffler, the self-proclaimed "aficionado for everything Lower Oak Lawn". Friday I enjoyed a glorious patio lunch on what had to be the most beautiful day EVER in Dallas. A friend and I met at the Meddlesome Moth, a new-ish restaurant concept in the Design District. An appropriate location for such a uniquely designed space from Dallas restauranteur Shannon Wynne. A few interesting design elements... the floating stained glass panels in the dining room were salvaged from the Hard Rock Cafe, and the tap wall is covered in quarters. Be sure to hit the patio with a large glass of wine before the Texas summer heat arrives!

HIGH POINT WAS A HUGE SUCCESS! We loved heading up to North Carolina last week and checking out new products from favorite vendors, as well as meeting new vendors. The #1 new favorite at JMI is Mr. Brown, a new line from Julian Chichester. Julian Chichester has always been a swoon-worth collection, but a little high priced for most of us. This new line has a reasonable price point and we can't wait to start using Mr. Brown as a source for our super chic clients!!

I had a little hiccup during this week's trip to North Carolina... my phone was lost for 2 days! Luckily my travel companion let me use her phone to take snapshots of all the FABULOUS FINDS from High Point market. Stay tuned over the next few days for full vendor reports plus photos.

In the meantime, I have to rave about a little hotel in Greensboro, North Carolina. The Proximity Hotel is not only one of the coolest that I have visited, it is also LEED certified (GREENsboro!) and has one of the best restaurants in NC, Print Works Bistro. The excitement continued for this market hot-spot when I had my own little celebrity designer sighting... the super suave THOM FILICIA.

One of my favorite spots in Round Top is La Bahia. It is the most darling little farmhouse that is packed FULL of antique silver, collectable dinnerware, vintage linen, and antique books. It didn't take me long to spot (GASP!) some of my very favorite books that one day I hope can grace my library.... works by the Bronte sisters and Jane Austen. Not much beats the uber-romantic stories of Wuthering Heights, Jane Eyre, and Pride and Prejudice (I love me some Mr. Darcy!!!), especially when they are enveloped in such beautiful antique bindings.

The white parchment bindings also caught my eye. Intricate gold leaf art deco designs create a show-stopping feature that would be an amazing addition to any library.

We LOVE hides!!! Sometimes a straight-laced rug just won't do. The fun look & irregular shape of a hide rug can break up a stiff atmosphere, or be a great solution to an odd shaped room. Hides are no longer your typical cowboy aesthetic... now they come in all colors and patterns, some with glitz & glamour. The UPS man brought the most amazing box to our doorstep this morning! Last month I read about Rock Paper Scissor paper goods in the premier issue of High Gloss online magazine. When visiting the website, I came across this beautiful grand box of letterpress stationery. I was THRILLED when I opened the bright orange silk gift box to unveil my four custom designs... they are BEAUTIFUL. It will be hard to decide which ones to use first!

JMI just wrapped up a 2-DAY REVAMP in North Dallas and loved shopping the nearby HomeGoods store at Coit & Campbell. When we got back to the office and investigated other locations, we found out that a new HomeGoods is coming closer to us!!!

The Shops at Park Lane, home to Saks Off 5th and Nordstrom Rack, will welcome HomeGoods in the Spring of 2011 (now!!!). For those of you who are unfamiliar, HomeGoods is a home fashions store that provides a vast selection of high quality and unique home fashions, including brand and designer name merchandise at prices that are 20% - 60% less than finer catalog, specialty, and department store prices. The new store will be located below Whole Foods and directly across from Nordstrom Rack on the street level.
